Bupa appoints Professor Melvin Samsom as Group Chief Medical and Sustainability Officer

Bupa, the international healthcare company, has announced the appointment of Professor Melvin Samsom as Group Chief Medical and Sustainability Officer. Melvin will take on the Sustainability remit in addition to his position as Group Chief Medical Officer following Nigel Sullivan’s retirement after more than eight years in Bupa’s executive leadership team.

As Group Chief Medical and Sustainability Officer, Melvin will be responsible for continuing to drive Bupa’s sustainability agenda, ensuring it remains core to the company’s strategy and purpose of helping people live longer, healthier, happier lives and making a better world. He reports into Iñaki Ereño, Group CEO, and is part of the executive leadership team.

Melvin brings extensive experience across healthcare, research and sustainability. He is an internationally recognised leader in healthcare and academic medicine, having completed his PhD at the University of Utrecht before going on to hold several senior academic and hospital leadership roles. These include Professor of Gastroenterology and Chief Executive Officer of Radboud University Medical Centre in the Netherlands, and Chief Executive Officer of Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm.

Melvin has already played a key role in shaping Bupa’s sustainability strategy as former Chair of the Board Sustainability Committee, bringing deep expertise and insight into the intersection of health and sustainability.

Iñaki Ereño, Group CEO, said: “We are delighted to appoint Melvin to this role. His unique combination of clinical, academic and leadership experience, alongside his deep understanding of sustainability, make him ideally placed to lead the next phase of our journey. Under his leadership, we will continue to focus on building a healthier future for people and planet.”

Professor Melvin Samsom, Group Chief Medical Officer and incoming Group Chief Sustainability Officer, said: “I am honoured to take on this role at such an important time for healthcare and sustainability. The connection between human health and the health of our planet has never been clearer.

“At Bupa, we have a unique opportunity - and responsibility - to help shape the future of healthcare, supporting systems that are not only clinically effective, but also resilient, low-carbon, and focussed on prevention. I look forward to working with colleagues, partners and stakeholders to build on the strong foundations already in place and accelerate progress towards a healthier future for both people and planet.”
