Aaron Cruden - Cancer
All Black #1105
Aaron Cruden was a gifted play maker with a strong boot and proven ability to spark a backline. Aaron was born and raised in Palmerston North, playing rugby throughout high school with plenty of success.
At age 19, while playing professional rugby, Cruden was diagnosed with cancer, which resulted in months of chemotherapy and the removal of a testicle. The following year, while he was in remission, he was named as New Zealand Under 20s captain for the IRB Junior World Championship in Japan. Less than 12 months later Cruden debuted for the All Blacks.
Alongside a pivotal role in the 2011 World Cup winning All Black squad, Cruden famously kicked a last play, sideline conversion against Ireland in Dublin to secure the All Blacks a perfect 14-0 record for the 2013 season, making them the first team in the professional era to win every Test match in a calendar year.
