Bupa UK becomes the first healthcare provider to join The 5% Club

Bupa UK is the first healthcare provider to sign up to The 5% Club, strengthening its commitment to nurturing talent and providing training opportunities at all levels while earning a salary.

The 5% Club is a group of multinationals and SMEs committed to recruiting apprentices, sponsored students and graduate trainees in roles where they can earn salaries while undertaking on-the-job training. Other members include the Ministry of Defence, Network Rail and Hilton Hotels.

By joining The 5% Club, Bupa UK is committed to ensuring more than 5% of its workforce is in "earn and learn" positions within the next five years – a figure it already exceeds, with almost 1,000 of its UK employees in similar roles.

David Hynam, CEO of Bupa UK, said: “I am delighted we have joined The 5% Club, which strengthens our commitment to providing training opportunities for our people. At Bupa UK, we pride ourselves on being an organisation that nurtures and empowers our people to be at their best.”

This year, Bupa UK will look to extend its “earn and learn” training with further opportunities at all levels in business lines such as health services, dental and insurance.

As a member of The 5% Club, Bupa UK is:

  • Committed to helping the UK’s growth agenda and acknowledging the importance of developing its people as both a business and social imperative
  • Playing its part in addressing youth unemployment and skills shortage
  • Pledging to have more than 5% of its UK workforce enrolled on formalised apprentice, sponsored student and/or graduate development schemes over the next five years, measuring and reporting on progress annually
  • Committed to encouraging other businesses to participate in the campaign.

David added: “We’re proud to already exceed the 5% figure but our work doesn’t stop there – it is an area we are always looking to grow and we encourage other businesses to work together and participate to help shape our workforce of tomorrow.”

Lady Cobham CBE, Director General of The 5% Club, said: "We’re delighted to welcome Bupa into membership - our very first healthcare member. The 5% Club provides a fantastic network of HR professionals, sharing and learning from each other. All our members share an ethos of creating a skilled workforce through ‘earn and learn’ development programmes, helping people develop meaningful career paths. We are delighted that Bupa will be a part of this in the future."
