Bupa UK: How Bupa Cromwell Hospital is supporting the NHS during Covid-19

We are currently facing the greatest healthcare challenge of our lifetime, and while many of us stay at home, teams at NHS and private hospitals are working tirelessly to support not only those battling COVID-19, but also those requiring emergency care.

At Bupa Cromwell Hospital we have been working with the NHS throughout the outbreak to alleviate pressure on them by providing care for NHS patients.

As a recognised centre of excellence for cancer care, we’re supporting the Royal Marsden Cancer Hub to ensure that NHS hospitals across London continue to deliver urgent cancer treatment as the outbreak continues.

At this time, the focus of the hospital is on critical cancer surgery for patients who need urgent treatment, including breast, urology, gynaecology, colorectal and endocrine surgery. Patients from several London NHS trusts have been transferred to the Cromwell in the past few weeks for treatment.

As always, it takes an entire team to keep the operations running smoothly, something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by visitors. One patient who had an operation after being transferred to the Cromwell following a breast cancer diagnosis said:

“I cannot thank you all enough for the care offered to me especially in the current circumstances. You were all so kind and reassuring at a traumatic time in my life, when I couldn't have my family around me, and my overnight stay was made easier because of the wonderful and amazing staff from the nurses to the lovely people that served my breakfast, lunch and dinner.”

Later this year, the hospital was due to open a brand new, 10-bed intensive care unit. In response to the national emergency, we worked to open this early and, at the end of March, it was up and running to help patients needing critical care. Our former intensive care unit has also been transformed a high dependency unit for patients to receive extensive care following major surgery.

As well as providing cancer care for NHS patients, we are also treating transferred patients for dialysis and medical step down, to relieve capacity pressures in a number of NHS Trusts across London.

We’ve also supplied essential equipment, including ventilators, to the Nightingale Hospital and local NHS hospitals.

We are doing all we can to support the NHS at the Cromwell and will continue to offer our resources for as long as we are needed. Thank you to all the fantastic staff for the great job they are doing on our frontline.
