Bupa UK backs Mental Health at Work Commitment

Today, we’re making a commitment to adopt six standards that will help us prioritise mental health in the workplace so we continue to create an environment where our people can thrive.

Although the importance of safeguarding mental health has become much more understood over the last few years, the latest research from Business in the Community still shows a pervasive culture of silence in workplaces across the UK. Only half say they feel comfortable talking about mental health in the workplace, and two in five say they have experienced a work-related mental health issue in the last year.

Along with over twenty of the UK’s most recognised businesses and organisations, we’re supporting the Mental Health at Work Commitment and encouraging employers of all sizes to join the movement to improve standards of mental health care at work.

The commitment is intended to support employers that want to take action and is backed up by hundreds of resources to help organisations learn from others. It’s based on six standards which are drawn from best practice that has been shown to make a difference.

The six standards are:

  1. Prioritise mental health in the workplace by developing and delivering a systematic programme of activity.
  2. Proactively ensure work design and organisational culture drive positive mental health outcomes.
  3. Promote an open culture around mental health.
  4. Increase organisational confidence and capability.
  5. Provide mental health tools and support.
  6. Increase transparency and accountability through internal and external reporting.

Employers wanting to join the commitment can visit the Mental Health at Work website.
