British Paralympic champion Lauren Steadman latest star to support #BupaHealthTracks playlist to celebrate the nation’s health and wellness

Lauren Steadman joins Bupa Health Tracks campaign

British Paralympic champion, Lauren Steadman, is encouraging the nation to celebrate how health looks different to everyone by lending her to support to the #BupaHealthTracks campaign.

The inspirational playlist, launched by DJ and Presenter Gok Wan, now contains over 20 hours of music, with top 20 songs that help the nation feel motivated to complete their daily health and wellness wins.

From rock greats such as Queen and The Beatles, to superstar Whitney Houston and country legend Dolly Parton, the open playlist has been launched in support of Bupa’s new ‘This is Health’ brand campaign, which presents how in 2022 health looks and feels different to every individual.

This follows research that half of UK adults (53%) say music is their go-to to motivate them to exercise – with one in 10 (12%) listening in the gym. And, whilst pop is the genre most associated with happiness, dance is the frontrunner when it comes to getting motivated, and classical leads the way for inspiration and holistic wellness.

Two thirds (62%) say that music is integral to their personal health and wellness journey, whilst close to three quarters (70%) say that music has helped them through stressful times in their lives.

Additionally, more than a third (34%) use music to help them manage pain. 

Lauren Steadman MBE, Paralympic Triathlete and Swimmer, said: “Music is a vital part of my training program ahead of my races, I use it on the treadmill and on the bike, as a boost of motivation. After a race, music helps me to relax and decompress, which is important for any athlete.

“I’m super happy to be supporting #BupaHealthTracks to spread the word on the power of music and I’m looking forward to seeing you add your own tracks to the #BupaHealthTracks playlist.”

Dr Luke Powles, Associate Clinical Director at Bupa UK, said: “Music can play a powerful role in athletes' mental preparation ahead of a game and during training, acting as a push factor against the feelings of anxiety and nervousness and boosting their energy levels. It can also improve performance and increase stamina.

“Whether using it to ‘psych’ yourself up before a big race, to help you dig deep during a workout or to chill out after a competition, choosing music you enjoy and that fits with your exercise routine can help you get more out of the experience.

“Many people may run or cycle to the beat of a track and it’s thought that music can distract people from any discomfort and fatigue they may feel when exercising meaning they can run further, cycle for longer, swim faster and lift heavier.”

Bupa has recently become the Official Healthcare Partner of ParalympicsGB, in a three-year partnership to provide British Paralympians with the highest quality healthcare on their journey to success at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games - and beyond.

The partnership will include practical health assessments designed to give a full overview of health and wellbeing to prevent and address concerns, as well as physical and mental health services.

Through the partnership Bupa and ParalympicsGB will also collaborate to challenge perceptions around disability in society, celebrating difference and diversity in order to help everyone achieve their goals, while also promoting inclusivity in business, healthcare and other areas of life.
