Sustainability governance

Why we need effective sustainability governance

Sustainability and wider environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues are important areas of focus for our Board. These issues play a key role in Bupa's purpose, values and strategy.

We need to manage climate-related risks and opportunities effectively if we are to execute our corporate strategy and achieve long-term growth. Effective governance also helps ensure that we're meeting our commitments and reporting progress accurately.

Our Board Sustainability Committee

We've strengthened our sustainability and ESG governance processes by establishing a Board Sustainability Committee. This committee comprises members of our Board, including non-executives, and members of our executive Sustainability Steering Committee.

Role of the Board Sustainability Committee

Our Board Sustainability Committee's role is to help the Board oversee our sustainability strategy.

The Committee also oversees sustainability initiatives across Bupa, in line with our purpose, values and corporate strategy.

The Committee has representation at Board and executive level. This ensures sustainability is factored into decision-making at the highest levels of our organisation.

The Board Sustainability Committee's remit

The Board Sustainability Committee's remit covers:

  • monitoring and compliance against our priorities and commitments
  • environment and climate action
  • our contribution to society in the countries in which we operate
  • reviewing our external statements, disclosures and other reporting on sustainability and ESG matters
