Being disruptive is the best way to get things done

Life is all about overcoming challenges. Whether it’s passing exams, finding the right career or coming up with ways to tackle climate change or building tech that makes things easier - nothing is simple. But what can help is collaboration and innovation.

Diversity of thinking, diverging viewpoints, cultural differences can all help to spark the creativity that’s required to come up with new answers to tricky problems. At Bupa we have a unique resource, with 84,000 employees working across the world from Australia to Europe, the UK, Latin America and Saudi Arabia and beyond. That’s a lot of different points of view to pull from.

These minds hold the key that will unlock better ways of doing things. That’s why over 700 people from 16 countries have joined the Bupa B Disruptive global hackathon this week. For 48 hours they have been working together to help us come up with answers to solve our customers’ toughest challenges.

People power

At Bupa, we want to be there for our customers, making things as easy as possible at what can sometimes be difficult times in their lives. A critical part of this is making things simple, but sometimes that’s hard. B Disruptive is about giving our greatest resource – our people – the chance to concentrate and collaborate to think about how Bupa can do things better. The goal is to come up with ways to deliver the best experience whether that’s accessing data, seeing a doctor or becoming a customer.

Our brains are hardwired to ‘stick to what they know’, so a break from the norm is a great way to fire up innovation. Working together also allows us to learn from one another and build networks that take us outside our usual teams and structures. One of our teams this year includes a care home worker, an insurance team member, a grad, a technology architect, a product owner and a sales manager – from across the UK, Europe & Saudi Arabia.

Building a better future

Bupa BDisruptive recognises that to build the future our customers deserve we need to be a little bit disruptive. We need to forget about business as usual and inspire the innovation we need to ensure that whenever our customers turn to us, we can offer them the solutions they need that support them to live longer, happier and healthier lives.
