Our employee health and wellbeing

Wellbeing at our heart

We know our people make the difference, so we support them to be their very best. That’s why employee health and wellbeing is crucial to us – it means we’re living our purpose of helping people live longer, healthier, happier lives.

Whether its healthier bodies, healthier minds, healthier cultures or healthier places, our global Smile programme is a world-class approach to supporting our people.

We’re proud of our open, authentic and inclusive culture made up of over 84,000 people around the world, and our approach to supporting the wellbeing of each and every one.

Smile – you’re at Bupa

We want our people to be healthy and happy. Smile is our global health and wellbeing programme and helps Bupa people bring the very best of themselves to the workplace – and to feel great generally.

Smile activities and benefits are tailored across our global business, but at its heart is our bespoke Performance Energy programme. This resilience-building approach helps people maintain optimum energy levels so they can manage the everyday pressures of work and life.

We provide Performance Energy support for individuals and teams as well our leaders. (PDF, 0.1MB) And, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we support our people while working from home (PDF, 1.2MB).

Our Little Book of Energy (PDF, 1.4MB) explains more.

Celebrate diversity

Healthier minds

With seven billion unique people on our planet, there’s no such thing as ‘normal’. We know that talking about mental health can feel awkward and often takes courage.

Our global approach to mental health focuses on raising awareness, creating supportive workplaces, encouraging open conversations and providing access to support and care when it's needed.

By harnessing our global expertise, we bring together a wide range of practical support tailored to meet the needs of our people wherever they are in the world.

The Bupa UK Foundation works with leading mental health charity,
Mind, to empower young people to look after their own mental health.

Professional development

Healthier bodies

As well as focussing on our mindset, our Performance Energy programme helps us think about our approach to how we look after ourselves physically.

Across the globe, our people are supported to stay fit and healthy and our internal expertise means we have a wealth of world-class clinical knowledge.

Whether it’s help to improve sleep, looking after our immune system or doing chair yoga while working from home, we aim to embed both physical and mental wellbeing across the entire employee lifecycle with a wide variety of resources.

Healthier culture

‘Our people make the difference’ is one of the five pillars of our Sustainability and ESG strategy.

As well as promoting an inclusive and diverse culture, we have an independent and confidential Speak Up process to protect our people and our Bupa values.

Our commitment to the highest professional standards is captured in the Bupa Code and we use our annual People Pulse survey to listen to our people and act on the things that matter most to them.

A healthier culture comes from the top and our leaders play a critical role. We support our leaders to look after the wellbeing of their teams.

Healthier places

Our work places have been designed with the wellbeing of our people front of mind.

Our people work across a variety of work spaces including clinical settings and offices, as well as remotely from home (PDF, 1.2MB).We provide support and resources to help them with their wellbeing, wherever they are.

Around the world, we aim to create shared value in the communities we’re part of. In Spain, Sanitas founded the Healthy Cities project to promote healthy lifestyles and healthier urban environment. The initiative has also launched in Hong Kong and Chile.
