How do you inspire already great leaders to drive improvement? With more than 10,000 clinicians working at Bupa UK, that was the challenge facing its Clinical Leadership and Engagement team when it began working on its first in-house development programme for clinical leaders.
The answer was a three-month Leading Clinical Excellence programme - which scooped the award for Clinical Engagement at Bupa’s Global Clinical Excellence Awards last month.
Open to all clinical leaders across Bupa UK, the programme is delivered through a blend of personal and online training, mentorship and coaching sessions. It is designed to give senior clinicians the skills to develop their careers and improve health outcomes for Bupa members.
Some of the projects aiming to improve our customers’ experience worked on by those who took part in the course last year include the Breast Cancer Care and End of Life pathways – both ground-breaking initiatives made possible through the collaborative nature of the programme. It’s also led to several internal promotions, helping Bupa UK develop its wealth of clinical talent.
The Breast Cancer Care Pathway project, which enables a swift and seamless diagnosis for our customers, was led by Dr Petra Simic, Bupa UK Medical Director for Health Clinics. Describing herself as a “disillusioned GP” when she first joined Bupa UK; one year later, she sees her career very differently.
“I have experienced more support and investment in me than I’ve experienced in my whole career before Bupa,” she said. “I have progressed to Medical Director and, for the first time in my career, I feel I have the resources to make a difference and am truly valued.”
By the end of 2018, more than 160 clinicians will have taken part in the programme, with its reach being extended by the launch of an online course.
