Nothing is too much trouble for Bupa's maintenance man

24 September 2009

Alan Mawer, from Bupa’s Wellington Park Nursing Home in Enfield, has been announced as the overall winner for the national Unsung Heroes and Heroines Awards.

Alan has worked as the maintenance man at Wellington Park Nursing Home since 2007. He was nominated by several home managers, and even a regional director, for his work in not only his own home but also other surrounding homes where he had volunteered to mentor three new maintenance men in his own time.

Home manager of Wellington Park, Jane Hepton said “When it comes to Alan, nothing is ever too much trouble, his helpful can-do attitude and constant efforts to put the residents and employees needs first, made him the obvious choice for the nomination.

The Unsung Heroes and Heroines Awards were set up in 2007, by the Institute of Healthcare and Management, to recognise the roles played by thousands of healthcare workers who ensure that patients and communities get the very best in healthcare services.

Nominees for the awards do not need to hold a medical role. They include anyone who has made a difference to patients’ lives, whether it be cheerfully serving tea and biscuits or ensuring everything runs as efficiently as possible behind the scenes.

Alan, a father of two, said: “It was a big surprise to be nominated for the award and an even bigger one to win it! My job allows me to make a difference to so many lives, it is so varied from one day to the next. To me it is all in a day’s work, when thinking about how much I enjoy my role interacting with the residents, most of the time it doesn’t really feel like work.”
