Brits are unfulfilled at work, not doing enough exercise and not getting enough sleep.
According to the Bupa 'How Are You Britain?' report, one of the biggest hurdles to complete wellbeing is work, with half (49 per cent) of UK workers unfulfilled in their current jobs.
The research, which asked over 2,000 people 'how are you?' to understand some of the primary wellbeing issues facing the nation, reveals our jobs are getting us down, with one in five (21 per cent) annoyed by a lack of career progression.
Close to half (49 per cent) of Brits are also frustrated about the amount of money they have - or rather don't have at the moment.
How are you Britain?
It's not only work weighing us down. When it comes to exercise close to three in five (58 per cent) Brits admit they don't get enough*.
And we're not doing so well on the sleeping front either: more than one in three (36 per cent) people are regularly kept awake by worry and four in 10 (40 per cent) by general insomnia.
In fact, just under one in five (18 per cent) get less than six hours** sleep and close to half (46 per cent) of worried Brits wake-up more than twice a night.
Bupa's Assistant Medical Director, Dr. Peter Mace, said:Our survey tested six 'wellbeing indicators': diet, exercise, happiness, stable relationships, job and sleep. And while there is no magic cure-all, exercise is potentially the most powerful wellbeing tool we have. Getting enough exercise helps against feeling down, boosts energy levels and can also help you sleep better.
According to the survey Brits are doing best on diet with close to half (45 per cent) getting their five a day, however this soon changes if we're tired or grumpy with 49 per cent of people turning to junk food.
Not-so-happy people
When it comes to happiness, the research reveals more than a third (34 per cent) of people are not content with their life in general.
Topping the league table of discontent for women is their weight (53 per cent versus 42 per cent of men); whereas men are most dissatisfied with the amount of money they have (49 per cent).
And when it comes to men and women, a quarter (25 per cent) of people are unhappy with their current relationship situation, with one in four (25 per cent) arguing with their partner on a weekly basis.
Wellbeing Indicators
However, help is at hand. Bupa has tested six indicators which may contribute to happiness and wellbeing and devised an online quiz to help people rank their performance.
