Bupa, the international healthcare group, has been awarded the Plain English Campaign's web award for online clarity for its website, bupa.co.uk.
The Plain English Campaign Media Awards celebrate simplicity in public information. Bupa.co.uk, which has factsheets on medical conditions ranging from angina to yellow fever as well as information on health insurance and care homes, was praised for being written in clear, understandable language and for being easy to navigate. All Bupa's information is written by professional health writers and approved by medical experts.
Chrissie Maher, founder of the Plain English Campaign commented:Getting older might make you wiser, but it doesn't make it any easier to understand a pile of jargon and gobbledygook. When I'm not firing on all cylinders, the last thing I need is more stress when I need help. The Bupa website comes very close to ticking all the boxes for our own Internet Crystal Mark* and the judging panel were comfortable with using it.
Dr Layla McCay, assistant medical director for Bupa, said:We're delighted that Bupa.co.uk has won this award. We've worked hard to ensure our website is easy to read and navigate. We're pleased the Plain English Campaign has recognised our efforts to make sure anyone who visits our website can find what they need quickly and that we explain complex health care issues simply.
* The Internet Crystal Mark is a kite-mark developed by the Plain English Campaign, indicating that a website meets its standards for clarity.
