The Bupa Gables Specialist Nursing Home in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire has just won an award for its innovative care of residents who are nearing the end of their lives.
At an award ceremony in London organised by the International Journal of Palliative Care, home manager, Dawn Harbour was presented with a trophy for the Non-Cancer Award by Philip Larkin, vice president of the European Association of Palliative Care.
Dawn and the team from The Gables specialist dementia care home were recognised for their innovative and sensitive care, specialist education and training when dealing with people with dementia.
They have developed a programme to help residents and their families receive not only the best care possible, but to make informed decisions about the care they want. Dawn and her team help and advise residents and families about the palliative care for people with dementia, with the focus on respecting their wishes about the levels of intervention wanted and communicating these choices to all parties involved - from GPs to social workers.
