18 weeks too long to wait for treatment say eight out of ten Britons

Back to UK

As the NHS announces it has met its 18-week waiting time targets on surgery, a nationwide study reveals that more than eight out of 10 Britons feel this is still too long to wait for treatment.

The survey of around a thousand people by health and care company Bupa found that many Britons feel 18 weeks (equivalent to four and a half months) is too long to be left in pain, worrying about their health and watching their condition deteriorate further. Almost half of those Britons who feel 18 weeks is too long to wait believe waiting times for NHS treatment should be less than one month.

Dr. Natalie-Jane Macdonald, managing director at Bupa UK Health Insurance, commented:

The Government has had success in reducing NHS waiting times, but in today's instant-access society, where you can order your shopping online and have same day delivery, waiting 18 weeks for treatment is far too long.
