Bupa’s Oncology Support Team receives Macmillan training

Back to UK

Bupa’s Oncology Support Team has received expert training from Macmillan Cancer Support, to help them to better assist customers throughout their cancer treatment.

Macmillan Cancer Support designed a training programme for more than 30 Bupa professionals. The training deepened the team’s understanding of how the experience of cancer - from diagnosis to treatment and in some cases palliative care - may affect a person physically, emotionally, socially and financially.

Bupa’s Oncology Support Team is led by specialist oncology nurses and is available to all members who are diagnosed with cancer. The team helps people to navigate their cancer treatment and discuss all the choices that are available to them, appreciating that each person’s circumstances are unique.

Suma Surendranath, PABC/Volunteer Learning and Development Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support said:

Macmillan is delighted to have worked with Bupa’s Oncology Support Team to provide an insight into how the experience of cancer may affect their members. Macmillan sees the potential in sharing knowledge with corporate partners to enhance the service they provide, enabling them to better support their customers throughout their cancer journey and signposting them to the practical, medical and financial support that Macmillan provides.

Natalie-Jane Macdonald, managing director, Bupa Health and Wellbeing said:

We know that when someone is diagnosed with cancer it can have a huge impact on their lives and the lives of those close to them. In addition to providing prompt access to the latest drugs and treatments, the Oncology Support Team offers support and guidance to help people navigate their options and practical advice such as where to purchase wigs following chemotherapy. We are grateful to Macmillan for helping us to better support our members at a time when they need it most.

The Oncology Support Team forms part of Bupa’s Cancer Promise which was developed to help all of Bupa’s health insurance customers to understand exactly what their cover provides. The Promise explains that Bupa will cover members’ cancer treatment at every stage, even if it spreads or if it is incurable. Bupa also promises that there will be no financial* or time limits on people’s cancer care meaning that they can be confident that they will be fully covered throughout their treatment.
