Bupa and Cricket Australia announce health partnership

Back to Australia

Bupa, a leading Australian healthcare group today announced a three-year partnership with Cricket Australia (CA) that will see the country's premier four-day competition renamed the Bupa Sheffield Shield.

As part of the partnership, Bupa will also fulfil a pivotal off-field role by becoming the Australian cricket team's official health partner. Importantly, Bupa will continue to provide health insurance to the team, as well as give its medical and coaching support team access to healthcare expertise from around the globe.

Bupa is expertly placed to help support the team's healthcare requirements given it currently cares for more than three million Australians through its private health insurance, aged care, optical care, telephone-based health coaching, and corporate wellness businesses.

Importantly, Bupa is part of a wider healthcare group that operates in 190 countries around the globe, which will ensure the wider playing and coaching group can access leading healthcare advice regardless of where the team is playing.

Bupa's Director of Group Development, Mark Engel, said he was confident this innovative health partnership would provide significant benefits to the Australian cricket team.

He said:

We're enormously excited to support the Aussie cricket team's healthcare requirements. We appreciate that to be the best in the world you need the very best support crew. And we're committed to ensuring the Aussie team has access to the best practice healthcare support.

Engel went on to say that Bupa was delighted to partner with the Sheffield Shield.

This iconic competition, which has a proud history of developing some of the game's greatest players, is a natural fit for us given our shared commitment to active and healthy lifestyles.

CA Chief Executive Officer, James Sutherland, said CA was delighted that Australian cricket had formed a relationship with a global organisation of Bupa's reputation and expertise.

He said:

Health, sport and physical activity are a logical mix - CA and Bupa objectives are closely aligned, with each being committed to promotion of healthy lifestyles,

As part of the partnership, Bupa will work with CA to develop a grass-roots program that promotes healthy lifestyles through participation in cricket and to learn about the long-term health benefits of physical activity and exercise.

Additionally, Bupa and Cricket Australia will distribute regular online health videos to fans across the country that showcase skills training, injury prevention techniques, nutrition and exercise programs needed to perform at your best.

Engel said:

We look forward to working with CA to support the Australian cricket team, and to encourage the next generation to live longer, healthier and happier lives.
