Bupa supports moves to reduce use of anti-psychotic drugs

12 November 2009

Bupa today welcomed the announcement by the Government to reduce the amount of anti-psychotic drugs prescribed to people with dementia in care homes.

The announcement echoes a report on the reduction in the use of anti-psychotic drugs by Bupa’s Dr Clive Bowman issued earlier in the year.

Dr Clive Bowman, Bupa Care Service’s medical director, said:

“Bupa is delighted by the call to reduce the amount of anti-psychotic drugs prescribed to people with dementia, and we welcome the Minister’s announcement today which is a huge step in the right direction. We know that positively-engaged doctors and confident well-trained care staff can work together to dramatically reduce drug use and improve the quality of life of people with dementia. This good practice should be recognised as standard. “
