The programmes

Back to Graduate opportunities

We offer four different graduate programmes

All of them involve working in real roles. Whichever one you join, you can expect a high level of challenge along with the support to develop the skills and experience you need to become a senior figure at Bupa.

General

A place on the General programme will see you working across varied functions that will drive our business forward. This is a chance to experience different areas ranging from strategy, sales and business development to project management, HR and operations.

The programme itself consists of an extensive induction followed by three placements over 18 months. Placements could be in any one of our businesses, anywhere in the UK, or internationally. The possibilities are many and varied. Here's an example of what 18 months on the General programme might look like:

  • Six months in a project management role with our Corporate Centre Medical Team in London
  • Six months in a frontline operational role within a Wellbeing clinic in Manchester
  • Six months working in a business development role with our Latin American operation based in Miami

This programme focuses on your interests, your strengths, and your ambitions. As such, your placements will reflect this, giving a real breadth of experience, but also a high level of autonomy and responsibility as you work on business-shaping projects.

As well as an ongoing programme of leadership development training, we will also provide support for relevant professional qualifications. Graduates pursuing a career in HR, for example, have chosen to study for the CIPD. Others with an interest in project management have received support to attain the PRINCE2 accreditation.

Finance

If you are looking to forge a career in finance, Bupa is a unique place to start. As we don’t have any shareholders, we are able to reinvest our profits back into the business. Our commercial success and plans for future growth mean that our Finance teams will play a pivotal role in achieving our ambitions.

The healthcare industry is complicated and varied. Bupa’s businesses provide both funding and delivery of care across multiple geographies. As a result, you will gain exposure across our different business models as well an understanding of how finance works in an international organisation.

Over the course of up to three years you'll take on a range of responsibilities. This might see you analysing business performance, compiling management accounts, contributing to financial strategy or carrying out an internal audit. An example path might include:

  • 12 months in the Financial Accounting team in our UK insurance business Bupa Health and Wellbeing in Manchester
  • 12 months in a management accounting role with Group Finance in our headquarters in London
  • 12 months within Commercial Finance in our Australian care home business in Sydney.

Wherever you find yourself, expect to enjoy responsibility early on. We'll want you to deliver improvements, get involved in projects, and make a genuine contribution from day one.

At the same time, we'll also provide you with support to attain your choice of accountancy qualification: CIMA, ACCA or ACA.

Information Systems (IS)

As well as a genuine passion for technology, we’re looking for you to demonstrate a commercial mindset as you carry out four challenging placements over two years, across our UK businesses. From here you’ll learn how to successfully combine people, processes and technology for the benefit of the business.

Enabling you to develop a wide suite of skills, the variety and complexity of this environment will provide you with an excellent overview of how our global systems operate, harnessing technology to enable the business to deliver our vision.

You will be part of the team from day one, supported at all times by the technical expertise of your colleagues. Here are some of the things you can expect to be doing.

  • Implementing infrastructure and application-based technologies
  • Producing detailed design documents
  • Planning and leading projects following project methodology
  • Analysing, planning and managing a functional testing project
  • Suggesting improvements to current ways of working
  • Managing offshore resources and third-party suppliers

Over the course of the programme, you will develop not only a wide range of practical experience but also a network of contacts that will prove invaluable throughout the rest of your career. We will also encourage and support you to gain relevant professional qualifications along the way.

Marketing

As an international business, there is a broad range of markets for our equally broad range of services. That’s what makes this programme so interesting.

To succeed you’ll need to be passionate about marketing, independent, able to build your own networks and work with senior stakeholders. Add to this that you’ll need to be versatile, broad thinking, ambitious, and innovative; and you begin to get the picture of what it takes to market Bupa throughout the UK and around the world.

Over the course of 18 months, you will undertake three placements with different Marketing teams across the business. Each in turn will build on your marketing capabilities and encourage you to bring fresh ideas.

By the end of the programme, you can expect to have completed placements both in our UK businesses and also internationally. You will have built a thorough understanding of our broad approach to marketing including:

  • Brand leadership and management
  • Customer-led strategy and planning
  • Internal brand engagement and communications
  • Leveraging insight
  • Designing propositionsand delivering customer experiences
  • Marketing activation and execution

Together with comprehensive training, these experiences will help you shape your career and become a well-rounded marketing professional.
